I manage the a large Listproc server for the University of Washington and hypermail was evaluated to enhance archiving, but deleting old messages and the need to keep the original mbox files presented some problems. Excerpting some of Kent Landfield's ideas,

• The ability to delete a message
• The ability to cap the archive to X most recent messages

these are a high priority for our site. I would also add,

• The ability to cap the archive to X most recent time periods.
• These tasks be done without the original mail files.
