You might want to check out SWISH++, a much more efficient indexing and search engine developed by Paul Lucas at JPL. you can obtain it from:

It is written in C++, and will compile with the g++ 2.8.1 compiler (or
newer).
It requires the standard template libraries.
I've been using it about a month now, and it's at least an order magnitude faster than SWISH, and does not exhibit any of SWISH's faults, particularly when you're trying to index large numbers of files. It handles merging automatically, and has a number of other nice features.
